Note 04

When a week costs less than seven days, and why nobody mentions it

Multiplying the daily rate by the number of nights is the obvious arithmetic and, past about nine days, the wrong one.

14 April 2026Money

The daily rate is the number every parking site puts in front of you, because it is the smallest number available and it makes the comparison look good. For a two day trip it is also the correct number.

Past about a week it stops being correct, and the reason is that several operators on this corridor hold a separate weekly figure that they do not advertise.

Roughly where the line falls

Take an open surface bay at nineteen dollars a day as the example, since that is the floor on the rates page.

Length of staySeven times the day rateWhat a weekly figure typically looks like
5 days95No weekly rate applies
7 days133Around 115 to 125
10 days190A week plus three days, around 170
21 days399Three weeks, around 340

Those weekly numbers are ranges rather than quotes, because they differ by operator and by season. The point is the shape: the gap opens somewhere around day seven and widens with every week after it.

Why it is not advertised

Because a weekly rate makes the headline daily number look worse, and because the operators who offer one are pricing for occupancy rather than for a comparison table. It is not a secret; it is simply not the number anybody leads with.

Nobody at this desk earns more by keeping quiet about a weekly figure. If one applies to your dates, the quote will name it, and if the daily rate is genuinely better we will say that instead.

Where the break even actually sits

Between day eight and day ten for most operators on this corridor. Under a week, ask about the daily rate. Over ten days, always ask about the weekly one. Between the two, ask for both and take the smaller.

That is the whole method, and it is why the reservation form asks for both dates rather than for a number of days: the dates tell us which pricing to go looking for.

The trap in the middle

A stay of eight or nine days is the awkward zone, because a week plus two days at the daily rate sometimes beats a weekly rate and sometimes does not.

Two things decide it. Whether the operator prorates the days after the week at the daily rate or at a lower one, and whether any of your days fall in a peak week. Both are questions rather than rules, and both are ours to ask.

What this does not change

The rates page list still applies to a weekly booking: an oversized bay still costs more, an extra day at the end is still an extra day, and taxes are still passed through. A weekly rate is a better daily rate, not a different product.

Ask for both figures

Send the dates through the reservation form and the quote will carry whichever pricing is lower, named. Or call +1 (415) 906-2431 and ask for the arithmetic out loud. Monday to Thursday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Pacific Time.
