Note 02
Gate hours, and why a midnight return narrows the list
A lot that is perfect at two in the afternoon can be the wrong reservation entirely for a flight landing at ten past midnight, and the reason is who is standing at the gate.
3 March 2026Gate hours
There are three arrangements along this corridor and the quote should always say which one applies. It usually does not on other sites, which is why this note exists.
The three arrangements
Attended at every hour
Somebody in the office at every hour. The most expensive of the three, the least common, and the only one where a two in the morning collection is entirely ordinary.
Attended through shuttle hours, gated by code overnight
The most common arrangement here. An attendant from about five in the morning until eleven at night, and after that the exit gate opens on a code sent with your confirmation.
Works fine, with two conditions: you have to have the code, and the shuttle has to still be running when you land, which it often is not.
Attended, closed overnight
A handful of lots close the gate completely. Not gated by code: closed. Land after that and the car stays where it is until morning.
This is the arrangement that ruins a night, and it is why a late return is a question to settle before booking rather than after.
What that means for a late landing
| Your landing | What to check |
|---|---|
| Before 10 pm | Nothing. Any arrangement works |
| 10 pm to midnight | Whether the shuttle is still running, and until when |
| Midnight to 4 am | Whether the lot has an overnight code, and whether a shuttle meets late arrivals |
| After 4 am | Usually fine again, because the morning shift is starting |
The awkward window is midnight to four. On this corridor perhaps a third of operators will collect you in it, and the shuttle interval in that window is twenty minutes or worse.
A reservation that cannot be collected until morning is not a cheap reservation. It is a hotel bill with a parking receipt attached.
What to ask, and what we ask for you
When you reserve, tell us the return flight number and the landing time. We ask the operator three things on your behalf and put the answers in the quote:
- 1. Is the exit attended, coded or closed at that hour.
- 2. Does a shuttle meet arrivals at that hour, and at what interval.
- 3. Is there a number that a human answers at that hour.
If the answer to the third is no, we will say so and offer somebody else. There is no version of this where we let a booking sit on top of a lot that will not answer the phone at one in the morning.
The exit code, which is worth writing down twice
Where a lot gates by code, the code arrives with the confirmation. Put it somewhere that does not depend on a phone with a dead battery after eleven hours in the air.
Enough of those calls have come in to name it: after a missing shuttle, the commonest one in the morning hours is a gate code sitting in an email on a handset with no charge left.
Reserve with the landing time in it
Put the return flight number and its landing time in the reservation form, or call +1 (415) 906-2431 and say them out loud. Monday to Thursday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Pacific Time.
